GbE Services and Fiberchannel over SDH

Within the network of any operator, SDH is the most widespread transport technology. From its conception, SDH has demonstrated its effectiveness, guaranteeing exceptional robustness. In order to absorb the transport of the growing volume of data, and to satisfy the connectivity needs of many organizations, SDH has evolved to offer greater transmission capacity and new service interfaces. Most of the time, this adaptation process involves large investments in SDH equipment, drawing out the amortization cycles.

TELNET’s solution allows operators with SDH networks to provide Gigabit Ethernet, Fiberchannel, ESCON, and FICON services transparently and economically.

The illustration shows the typical application in which an operator has to provide Gigabit Ethernet, Fiberchannel, and FICON services between three branches of an organization. For this project, the operator doesn’t have optical fiber between the offices, and only has the capacity of its SDH network.

TELNET-RI’s solution for the previous scenario consists of using AnySAE. This module allows Gigabit, Fiberchannel, and FICON traffic to be encapsulated in a standard STM-16 container, to then be delivered to the SDH nodes. This way, the operator can transport these services transparently using SDH, without having to invest in expensive SDH equipment.

In addition to reducing costs, the AnySAE’s multi-service characteristics simplify management and maintenance of the solution. Each one of these modules offers four independent interfaces, which allows four data channels to be transported simultaneously in the same SDH container. Each AnySAE interface can work with ESCON, FICON, Gigabit Ethernet, or Fiberchannel services.

Returning to the previous diagram, the Data Center will have a MiniSAE chassis equipped with two AnySAE modules, each dedicated to the connection with one of the branch offices. Also, we can also install the AnySAE module, the MicroSAE or TriSAE chassis, in the branch offices, depending on the capacity and redundant power supply requirements.

AnySAE complies with all of the ITU recommendations in regard to SDH. Its functioning and interoperability is certified by the main telecommunications operators and equipment manufacturers, including: Telefónica, Alcatel, Marconi, Ericsson, Lucent, Huawei, Lucent, and Nortel.
